SouthEnd Minor Hockey Association

Player Programs

The SouthEnd Minor Hockey Association offers house league hockey for players at every age and skill level, from the developmental Under-7 (U7)  program, to Tiered Hockey Play, to a recreational Under-21 (U21) program.  SEMHA also feeds into a Competitive hockey association.

Under-7 (U7)

Our Under-7 (U7) program offers an introductory program for 5-6 year olds that is based on Hockey Canada's program guidelines for this age group. The focus of this program is skills development and fun.  N.B. - 4 year olds can register as well, but will be in U7 for 3 years.

Tiered Hockey Play

For Under-9 (U9) ages 7-8, Under-11 (U11) ages 9-10, Under-13 (U13) ages 11-12, Under-15 (U15) ages 13-14 and Under-18 (U18) ages 15-17, we offer a tiered hockey program (A/B/C) that provides players with the opportunity to play within an environment that matches their level of skill. For U9, U11 and U13, players that are new to hockey or with a 'beginner' level of skill have the opportunity to play at the 'C' level. Intermediate and advanced skill levels play at the 'B' and 'A' levels respectively. These teams play league games against other house-league associations within the Bytown District in the Bytown Minor Hockey League (BMHL). Created in 2003-2004, the BMHL encompasses SEMHA, the Canterbury Minor Hockey Association, Ottawa East Minor Hockey Association, Ottawa Centre Minor Hockey Association and West End Minor Hockey Association.  There are approximately 160 teams playing in the Bytown League.

Within SouthEnd, the number of teams is based on estimated player registrations and a target model of 14 to 16 players (13, 14 or 15 Skaters + 1 Goalie) per team for the Under-9 to Under-18 Divisions and 17 for Under-21 (15 Skaters + 2 Goalies). Variations may occur to the target number of players/team in certain situations, depending on actual registrations. The assignment of players to teams is based on the Association’s assessment of the skills of each player.

For the A levels, an additional variable is age. SouthEnd is committed to fielding one A team at each level. Second year players will be selected over a minor age player, where skills are assessed at an equal level.

The “C” level (Under-9, Under-11 and Under-13) will be comprised of players that are new to hockey and/or have been assessed at level of skill reflective of this level.

SouthEnd is committed to fielding balanced teams that reflect the actual level of skills of the players. We reserve the right to move players from one team to another to achieve this balance. Player movements will be determined by the Convenor for the specific level in consultation with the President and Vice Presidents and the affected coaches. Every attempt is made to complete player moves by Nov 15th but in exceptional cases, player moves may be required after this date. In all cases the SEMHA Executive and Convenor's decision is final.

Under-21 (U21)

For Under-21 (U21) ages 18-20 players, SEMHA offers a program for players graduating from all levels of Under-18 (U18) Hockey (House League and Competitive) with the Bytown Minor Hockey League.

Competitive Hockey

Players within the boundaries of SouthEnd are eligible to play competitive hockey with the competitive Ottawa Sting Minor Hockey Association. This association offers:
